Seikon no Qwaser – Review

Includes scenes of gloriously animated breast sucking, milking, a gothloli being eaten out, BDSM, a naughty nun, inverted nipples, crossdressing, and a naked girl in an apron. And so, so many boobs. Never thought I’d see all that in the same list on a TV show.

I debated with myself on whether I should add this title to the hentai section of my blog, or the “clean” side of my blog. For all of a minute. Then I said, “Self – this was aired on TV in Japan, and there isn’t hardcore. It’s going on the front-end.” (Although the version I’m reviewing was not broadcast this way…)

Seikon no Qwaser (聖痕のクェイサー, The Qwaser of Stigmata – which shall be known solely as Qwaser from here in) is a show that I have nearly zero words for. It’s like a hentai, without hardcore sex and with more plot than the average porno. 12 episodes have aired so far, in which the ‘plot’ and characters have only just been established, so I’ll have to wait for the additional 12 (24 episodes have been confirmed so far – 12 have aired/streamed as of writing this) before I get too deep into that. In a nutshell, it’s about alchemists who rejuvenate their powers by drinking soma, or breastmilk, from their virgin partners, or Marias. In the case of the main alchemist, Aleksander/Sasha Nikolavich Hell, his partner is an actual nun, known as Teresa. A nun with huge tits.

Breakdown of the main characters:

  • Sasha – cute emo-ish boy, controller of Steel
  • Mafuyu – Mid-boobied chick who lives with Tomo
  • Tomo – Big boobs
  • Katja – evil lolita bitch, controller of Copper. Keeps a “golem” she calls Mama with her.
  • Hana – Katja’s soma slave
  • Miyuri – Stereotypical rich brat. Her naivety is adorable at times.

The broadcast version was what I would call, a big hot mess. Minutes were cut away from the “Director’s Cut” version; whether it was just plain cut or the scene was swapped so the “action” was out of view. There’s no way anyone could have gotten a good idea of what the show was from the broadcast, and I’m not even sure how anyone could have watched it. There were whole scenes where they cut away to a still shot or a shot from the opening. Thank goodness for streaming/blu-ray releases.  The biggest differences in the episodes is the lack of Katja training her slave, Hana. Here’s a couple side-by-side comparisons between the broadcast and uncut versions (cut on left, uncut on right):

The animation is really high-level (not quite Juuden-chan budget, but still moves – a lot!), and the character designs are very cute. Although I’ve noticed a few similarities to other titles.

This was the biggest one. Not necessarily a plagiarism or a ripoff, but it made me laugh to see Greed blowing gas at people through his… straight jacket?

When I first started watching Qwaser, I had the idea of, “Oh great, another show about big breasts.” I’m not a fan of shows like Gravion or Tenjho Tenge, but thankfully this is nothing like them. (Even if the character designer is the same for Qwaser and Gravion.) I’m really digging what the show has set up so far, and I’m just hoping it’ll go uphill with the next 12 episodes.
